You’ve Got Facebook. So Why Bother With a Website?

November 2, 2026

Facebook and Instagram are brilliant tools for small businesses. They’re free to use, easy to update and provide a great way to keep in touch with customers.

But here’s a question worth asking.

What about the customers who aren’t following you?

The people searching Google for exactly what you offer, but who have never heard of your business?

If you’ve ever wondered, “Do I need a website for my small business when I’ve already got Facebook?”, here’s a real-life example that might change your mind.

A WhatsApp Message That Made My Day!

Recently, a WhatsApp enquiry arrived for one of my clients, Laura, who runs Perfectly Polished Nails.

The message began:

“Hi, I found you on your website and would love to book a mobile nail appointment…”

Just a simple enquiry. But those first few words were music to my ears.

“I found you on your website.”

Why was I so delighted? Because Laura’s website was part of a little experiment I’d started to demonstrate just how effective a simple online presence could be for a small local business.

Can a One-Page Website Really Make a Difference?

A few months ago, I began working with Laura, a local nail technician who had previously relied on Facebook and Instagram to promote her services.

Like many sole traders, she didn’t have a dedicated business website.

I wanted to demonstrate that you don’t necessarily need a large website, dozens of pages or an enormous budget to establish a professional online presence.

After securing a domain name, I created a simple, single-page website for Perfectly Polished Nails.

The website included information about Laura’s services, examples of her work and clear ways for potential customers to get in touch.

The aim was straightforward: make it easier for people searching online to discover her business and enquire about her services.

And then we waited to see what would happen.

The Results After Just Two Months

Within two months of launching the website, Laura reported:

  • 6 new clients
  • 8 returning clients, including customers she hadn’t seen for years
  • 11 consistent clients

These were the results Laura reported during that period, rather than figures we can attribute entirely to website traffic.

But the WhatsApp enquiry provided something particularly encouraging: direct confirmation that a potential customer had discovered her through the website.

For a small local business, that’s exactly the sort of opportunity a website can create.

And it demonstrates that a website doesn’t have to be complicated to be useful.

Why Have a Website When You Already Have Facebook?

Don’t get me wrong. Social media is a fantastic marketing tool, and I encourage small businesses to use it.

But Facebook and Instagram serve a different purpose from your own website.

1. Your business can be discovered through Google

Not everyone uses Facebook or Instagram to find local services.

Many potential customers head straight to Google when they’re looking for a local business, whether that’s a nail technician, Pilates instructor, plumber or independent retailer.

Having your own website gives you another opportunity to appear in relevant search results.

It doesn’t guarantee a first-page ranking, but a well-structured website with relevant content provides a foundation for search engine optimisation (SEO).

2. You have control over your online presence

Social media platforms can change their algorithms, layouts and features whenever they choose.

Your website is different.

You control the content, design, branding and information you share with your customers.

And rather than competing with social media posts, advertisements and distractions, visitors can concentrate on your business.

3. Customers can find the information they need

A well-designed website makes it easy for potential customers to understand what you offer.

Your services, location, contact details, photographs and customer testimonials can all be presented clearly in one place.

The easier you make it for someone to find information, the easier you make it for them to take the next step.

4. Your website and social media can work together

This isn’t about choosing between Facebook and a website.

It’s about using both effectively.

Social media is brilliant for sharing updates, building relationships and keeping in touch with your audience.

Your website provides a dedicated online home for your business, where people can learn more about your services and contact you.

Do Small Businesses Really Need a Big Website?

Absolutely not!

One of the biggest misconceptions about website design is that every business needs a large, complicated website.

For some small businesses, a professionally designed single-page website can be an excellent starting point.

It can include everything a potential customer needs to know, without unnecessary pages or features.

And as your business develops, your website can grow with you.

The most important thing is that your website has a clear purpose, works well on mobile devices and makes it easy for customers to get in touch.

Sometimes One Page Is All You Need

Laura’s experience with Perfectly Polished Nails is a great example of what can happen when a small business establishes its own online presence.

Within two months, she was reporting new customers, returning clients and a consistent client base.

And receiving a message that begins “I found you on your website” is a wonderful reminder of why having a website can be worthwhile.

Your next customer might not be following you on Facebook. But they could be searching for your services right now.
